Sobre este artículo

London: George Routledge and Sons, 1884. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7" by 5" . Not Stated . First UK edition of Joel Chandler Harris's anthology of African American fables and oral traditions. First UK edition of this collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris for children, first published in 1883 in the US. Many of these stories are didactic, and want to represent the struggle in the Southern United States, and more specifically in the plantations. The stories are written in a dialect which was his interpretation of Deep South African-American language of the time, for which he has endured some controversy since its publication.Illustrated with twenty full page plates. Collated, complete with 'Brother Rabbit and Miss Meadow' to frontispiece and 'Why Brother Bear has No Tail' to face p. 100 instead of 200.There are nine 'Uncle Remus' books by Harris. With eight leaves of publisher's advertisements to rear. This edition is seen in both blue and red cloth, priority is unknown. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with illustration to front board. Externally sound with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine, back strip darkened, boards marked. Internally, generally firmly bound. Light minor faint spotting to first and last few leaves, pages otherwise bright and clean. Good

Sinopsis

For more than a hundred years, the tales of Joel Chandler Harris have entertained and influenced both readers and writers. Nights with Uncle Remus gathers seventy-one of Harris's most popular narratives, featuring African American trickster tales, etiological myths, Sea Island legends, and chilling ghost stories. Told through the distinct voices of four slave storytellers, indispensable tales like "The Moon in the Mill-Pond" and other Brer Rabbit stories have inspired writers from Mark Twain to William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston to Toni Morrison, and helped revolutionize modern children's literature and folktale collecting.
