Merriam is primarily known now as a pioneer in mammalogy. His journeys as a naturalist led to an interest in Native American cultures, and he abandoned his scientific career to conduct ethnological research with tribes in California. This work compiles myths told to Merriam by Istet Woiche, tribal historian of the Madesi, a band of the Pit River tribe in northeastern California.
