Ambrose also delves into the social and personal dimensions of Nixon's life.

Notably, Nixon declined an interview for this book, although many of his aides and associates spoke to Ambrose. Despite Nixon's concerns about a perceived "left-wing" bias, reviewers of the time generally found the coverage levelheaded.
