Hardcover. xvi+486 pp. with bibliography, index. The North Caolina Railroad ran from Goldsboro west to Raliegh as was a major force in the growth that transformed the state in the last half of the 19th century. During its years of independent operation (the year covered by this volume, 1849-1871), the 223 mile railroad was North Carolona'slongest road, l;argest business corporation, and leading source of revenue. The road was then leased to the Richmind and Danville where it became a vital link connecting Washington and Atlanta, and still operates today as part of the Norfolk-Southern.
