Chapel Hill: North Carolina University Magazine, 1860. Soft cover. Good. 12mo. Pages 578-648 pages. Soft cover lacking the outer wrappers. Text is toned but generally clean. This is a monthly literary and historical magazine published by the University of North Carolina (the pagination was continuous in the various issues throughout the year). This issue reprints a pamphlet which Hooper published a year before in Raleigh in 1859. The Second Edition (a Confederate Imprint) was published in Chapel Hill in 1861. This is reprinted from the First Edition but before the Second. Scarce. Housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. William Hooper (1792-1876) was a teacher and pastor from Hillsborough, N.C. His father, William Hooper, Sr., was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The younger Hooper entered the University of North Carolina's prep school in 1804, and he received his B.A. in 1809 and his M.A. in 1812. He went on to study at Princeton. He had started tutoring at UNC in 1810, and he continued to teach in various capacities until 1837. In this work, Hooper relates many memories of his early days in Chapel Hill, and this was one of the sources liberally used by Kemp Plummer Battle in his history of the University.
