"We had quite a fire here one week ago last Sunday night about 11 O'clock, a large Ware House and Sorghum Works were all burnt down, they belong to a man in Chicago, Mr. Wilson."

Feb. 23, 1864 letter from Sandwich , Illinois, 4 pages, handwritten. (Bi-Folium sheet, 600-700 words.) Creased, separating at folds, but overall VG.

Letter addressed to "My Dear Mother" and closed, "...your son, Robert," provides details on this northern Ill. community during its early years, while mainly offering comforting assurances to family back home.

Once more after so long neglect, I have sat down to write you a few lines that you may know that we are still in the land of the living..." The "we" includes his wife, Phoebe, and their children. He reports that he is enjoying good health, "working for Mr. Adams on his house and corn sheller." He notes that a new minister was arriving soon, C. E. Bailey, "he once practiced Law in N. York. The Congregationalists have been holding some very good meetings for a few days past...and now the Methodists hold meetings every evening." There's a touching fantasy involving having wings with which to "just fly around and alight among you some Sunday morning."

Sandwich, Il. was founded in 1859.
