This book exists to record and commenorate the lives of 580 indivifuals whose names have never before appeared together in one place. it makes no claim to be loftily academic but aims to be both informative and accessible. Authos of collections of this kind much choose their own inclusion criteria, laying themselves open to criticism by those who, had they written the book, may have chosen otherwise. My criteria were decided after research and consultation. They are: birth, death, or residence of more than two years, although ninety per cent of cases it was over five. Living persons are excluded. Each biography is of necessity concise and if a subject's connection with Sussex was limited to birth, education, death or under five years' residence, is correspondingly abbreviated, but a decision was made to include them because locals may find this information interesting. Academic-style referencing has been consciously omitted in a deliberate attempt to keep this book to a reasonable length and uncluttered by thousands of footnotes.
