Gilt ruling on boards; gilt lettering and design, and raised bands on spine. Senate issue with Emory's rank as Brevet Major, Corps Topographical Engineers. "Made in 1846-47, with the advanced guard of the 'Army of the West.'" 43 full-page plates (3 more than called for in Howes E-145): 26 plates of buildings, landscapes, people and animals, 3 of military map sketches, 12 of illustrations of a single plant, and two with multiple plant illustrations (one of which is upside down). Pocket for foldout map present, but not the map. Rubbing to extremities with boards exposed where not covered by leather. Binding is tight, text block is square and tight. Gilt is bright. Staining on margins and foxing throughout, not affecting legibility of text or quality of plates. Owner's name, place and date on blank page facing title page. Otherwise, clean throughout. Near very good condition. Remarkable primary source of illustrations, maps and scientific data on the topography, zology, culture (Native American and European) and military history (Mexican-American War) of the Southwest at mid-nineteenth century. The remarkable plates were the first views of that territory to those in the Eastern United States at the time. . 3/4 Leather. Good++/No Jacket. 8vo.
