This collection of letters, revealing many vivid personal and secondhand recollections, give a fascinating portrait of life and travels in that vast area. The letters contain, among other descriptions, historical sketches of the Indian tribes in what is now the southern U.S. and the interior regions as far north as the Missouri River and Illinois.
