(iv), 176, (8)pp. A delightfully executed reproduction of a traditional book of hours-cum-devotional, updated to match a more modern, pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. Details, including initials, florals, and flourishes, are hand-gilded, and sumptuous pages favor the Belle Époque's adoration of romantic medievalism. Punctuating the text are three full-page illustrations of biblical scenes, including the Last Supper and the Nativity. The book is meant to be as much religious souvenir as family heirloom; portraits of the recipient's grandparents, with their names and years of life, act as bookend parerga. Added to the end of the book are several ruled sheets for "souvenirs de famille," and prefacing all of this hereditary paraphernalia is a dedicatory page of Marie-Louise Lucien-Lefebvre, whose monogram is onlaid in leathers and edged in gilt at both covers. Paris: Gruel et Engelmann, 1898. Fine but for several small spots on the upper cover. Small 8vo. 176p, [vi]. Extremely fine chromolithography highlighted in gilt by R. Engelmann. Each page with a different medieval style border and several full page plates in somber tones. Bound [by Gruel] in full golden tan crushed morocco with watered silk endpapers, a.e.g., the text block edges elegantly and intricately gauffered, the spine untitled with each panel densely gilt with small central floral ornament, the covers with a series of four rolled borders with large floral cornerpieces, fancy dentelles, and with two openwork brass clasps. Housed in untitled slipcase of thin maroon boards with lined in silk.

Chromolithographed text and richly decorative borders heightened with gold, plus three full-page plates. Finely bound by Fonteney in full crushed green morocco, backstrip with five raised bands and blind-stamped title ("Heures"), gilt dentelles, green silk doublures, all edges gilt, ribbon marker; presentation text stamped in gilt on front doublure. Preserved in the original silk-lined box with brass clasp (lightly worn and stained), the book is in fine condition. § A lovely chromolithographed French prayer book in practically pristine condition. A skillful imitation of a manuscript book of hours with elaborate borders of botanical and heraldic designs populated by fanciful figures and mythical beasts. The gilt-stamped front doublure records the book was presented on the marriage of Marguerite de Font-Réaulx and Gabriel Montagne, which took place December 1, 1885, in Saint-Junien, in the Haute-Vienne…
