Sobre este artículo

New York: Macmillan, 1920. Octavo, 12 volumes, bound in the publisher's bluish-grey cloth. Editions vary, though most are first American printings of the Constance Garnett translations (exceptions are The Brothers Karamozov, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Possessed, though these are all early printings.) A married set, with various owner's names on some volumes, and the spine panels toned or dust-soiled to varying degrees. Generally in very good condition, with some notable exceptions. The set was issued serially (i. e. not all at once), as Garnett worked tirelessly to translated these heavy tomes directly from the original Russian, so it is not uncommon for sets to have been cobbled together in this fashion. With all faults, still a pleasing set; difficult to find complete, and expensive to compile. Our listing images are meant to show the worst condition problems, and you can presume that overall condition is otherwise better than what is pictured. A full breakdown of the editions and their condition follows, but please contact us with any bibliographical or other questions:. THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV: 1920, thus an early printing. Very good or better, with some mild stains to cloth. Inner hinges strong and contents clean, but for owner's name on both endpapers. / THE POSSESSED: 1916. Though not identified as a later printing, there are six titles in the list opposite the title page, which indicates a later printing. A crisp, clean copy, but for an owner's name on the front free endpaper; near fine. / THE IDIOT: 1917. Stated fourth impression. Good or better, with some offsetting to the front endpapers, with a contemporary owner's name. Spine dulled. A touch shaken, but still sound. / CRIME AND PUNISHMENT: 1916, thus an early printing, wth six titles in the list opposite the title page. A sound copy, very good, witht eh spine gently dulled and a 1/2-inch tear at the crown. Hinges tight, contents clean. / THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: 1915. First printing. Very good, with a quarter-sized stain at the top of the rear board, mild edgewear, but a sound, crisp, clean copy internally. Ownership signature to the front free endpaper. / THE INSULTED AND INJURED: undated, but 1915. Five titles, plus A Raw Youth (to come "shortly") listed opposite the title page. Thus the first printing. Very good, with two ownership signatures on the front endpapers, and the contents clean. Some nicks to the corners. / A RAW YOUTH: 1916. First printing. Very good, with some even dust-soiling to cloth, large but mild stain on the rear board. Contents clean. Nameless period bookplate on the front paste-down. / THE ETERNAL HUSBAND AND OTHER STORIES: 1917. First printing. Fresh and crisp; near fine. Small stain to front endpapers, very gentle edgewear, but a sharp copy overall. Cheap paper stock with some uneven browning. / THE GAMBLER AND OTHER STORIES: 1917. Crisp and clean, near fine. Mild even dust-soiling to cloth, but the spine gilt still bright. Even browning to cheap paper stock, a few pages with tiny dog-ears, still sharp and nice. / WHITE NIGHTS AND OTHER STORIES: 1918. First printing. Good or better, with some mild wear to cloth, inner hinges tender, but holding, and a front blank re-attached archivally. Very cheap paper evenly age-toned. / AN HONEST THIEF AND OTHER STORIES: 1919. First printing. Half-title page and one internal leaf with some neat ink notations, else unmarked. Very cheap paper with marginal browning. Contents otherwise clean and sound. Rear inner hinge thinly cracked. Tiny owner's name to the front free endpaper. Overall good or slightly better. / THE FRIEND OF THE FAMILY: 1920. Scuffing/bookplate removal to front paste-down, inner hinges cracked, and the pages browned. Externally a little better. Good at best.

Sobre Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
