Including classic novels such as Robinson Crusoe (1719) and Moll Flanders (1722), as well as histories of ghosts, magic, the great plague, and the devil, the set is a splendid testament to the writer's celebrated versatility. 20 volumes, octavo (162 x 98 mm). Mid-20th-century burgundy straight-grain calf by Morrell, red and green spine labels, gilt-ruled compartments with central floral device, French fillet on covers in gilt, beaded gilt roll on board edges, floral gilt roll on turn-ins, green endpapers, edges gilt, brown silk bookmarkers. Steel-engraved portrait frontispiece of the author, with tissue guard, in first volume. Calling card in first volume inscribed "The first of the great English journalists. From Deborah". Spines sunned to pale brown, couple of corners bumped, occasional spots to contents but largely clean. A near-fine set.
