[ Aphra Behn, 1640-1689, a poet, spy, playwright, and novelist - Baker in his introduction begins with "To most people nowadays the name of Aphra Behn conveys nothing more intelligible that certain vague associations of license and impropriety..." and ends with "..it must be confessed that, apart from 'Oroonoko,' Mrs. Behn's fiction is of very little importance in the history of our literature." - thank goodness she has been rediscovered in the late 20th century!
