Barrie, with an original handwritten letter by Barrie.. Octavo, [twelve volumes]. Half vellum, gray paper boards, title in gilt on spines. Top edges gilt. Handwritten letter tipped in at front flyleaf of Volume I, written by Barrie to Lady Cave, wife of Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, 1st Viscount George Cave. The tipped-in letter dated June 5, 1927 describes Barrie's excitement for spending another summer holiday at a large estate in Stanway, England. Lord and Lady Cave also frequented the location, which could hold 30 to 40 people at a time. The guests would attend weddings and banquets there, and would play games like shuffleboard, cricket, and croquet during their longer stays. Also mentioned in the letter is Lady Cynthia Asquith, who worked as Barrie's personal secretary from 1917 until his passing in 1937. The two were very close, and Asquith received the majority of Barrie's estate with the exception of the rights to all Peter Pan works, which had previously been assigned to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. (Mackail, Barrie: The Story of J.M.B., pp. 601-602, 607-609).
