Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf and title page. A Spanish translation of Russell's shipwreck adventure, A Sailor's Sweetheart, published in 1880. This is one of a series of novels published by Appleton in Spanish translation in the 1880s and 1890s. The translator was an immigrant from Spain who arrived in the States about 1883. In the early 1890s, he wrote several educational works in Spanish for Hubert Howe Bancroft's History Company, with the intent of distributing them throughout California and Latin America. This is an example of his work for Appleton, another American publisher who had an active Spanish-language imprint business in the Americas. Copyrighted in 1889, we find no record of this work in OCLC before the present edition, of which we locate a single copy in Mexico.
