Scot, Alexander [fl. 1599-1622]. Caccialupi, Giovanni Battista [c. 1420-1496]. [Jodocus of Erfurt, Presumed Compiler of Vocabularius]. Novum Lexicon Iuris Utriusque Variorum Autorum Antonii Nebrissenis, Petri Gromoroi, Alexandri Scoti. &c. Ex Omnibus Iuris Lexicis in hunc Usque diem Editis Summa Diligentia & Succincto Tenore Collectum; Ut Locupletissimi Iuris Thesaurus Vicem Merito Obtineat. Addita Legum Romanor. Recensitione ex Divers Autoribus. Accesit Jo. Bapt. de Caccialupi Tractat. De Modo Studendi in Utroque Iure, Una cum Historia, Iuris, & Quibusdam Accursii Erroribus. Omnia ad Commodiorem Lectorum usum Varietate Charocterum Distincta. Cologne: Apud Ionnem Gymnicum sub Monocerote, 1597. [xvi], 957 pp. Main text in double columns. Octavo (7" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary vellum with yapp-style fore-edges, faint early hand-lettered title to spine, front pastedown and free endpaper renewed. Spotting and light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, short tear near center of fore-edge of rear board, rear hinge cracked, rear free endpaper lacking, 1/2" strip removed from head of title page, text not affected. Light browning and spotting to interior, tiny spark burn and ink spots to a few leaves, minor worming to sections of text block, mostly to margins, with minor loss to text, but not legibility, underlining and brief annotations in a few places. $1,750. * Later edition. A work of great authority, this popular dictionary was first published in 1559. It went through more than twenty-five editions, with several variations in content, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. All editions have two principal parts: the fifteenth-century Vocabularius attributed to Jodocus of Erfurt and Nebrija's Lexicon Iuris Civilis. It is a curious hybrid of late-medieval and renaissance scholarship; the former work is a typical scholastic compilation, the latter is a humanistic work grounded in philology and historical commentary. Nebrija was an important Spanish scholar and educator. Educated at the universities of Salamanca and Bologna, he read widely in law, medicine and theology. His philological work, which included the first Spanish grammar and dictionary, led to the stand.
