The dam was built to control the flooding of the Nile River and provide hydroelectric power to Egypt, but the rising waters threatened to submerge numerous cultural and historical sites. To save these treasures, an extensive relocation effort was launched, which involved the careful dismantling and reconstruction of temples, including Abu Simbel, to higher ground.
