Ernest Henry Wilson was probably the most intrepid plant hunter of the early twentieth century in the US, launching a vigorous crusade for more and better gardens across America. His plant knowledge was almost beyond compare and he had an uncanny sense of the landscape effects to be achieved with woody plants. In fact he could arguably be described as the Gertrude Jekyll of North America.
