Froude states the object of the present book 'was not only to see the Colonies themselves, but to hear the views of all classes of people there on the subjeact in which I was principally interested.' (Preface)Following its appearance in print, the book 'excited much controversy, and Froude was charged with misrepresenting the views of many persons, conversations with whom he reported in his book.
