Sobre este artículo

Winston-Salem: John F. Blair, Publish, (1973). Octavo, white cloth (hardcover), upper cover decorated with illustration of a small boat, 223 pp. Near-Fine, in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear and light soiling. From dust jacket: Almost legendary, the Outer Banks of North Carolina have been little known to most Americans. Now, however, our easy transportation and the swift groth of leisure time have made unspoiled and out-of-the-way vacation spots more and more scarce and more and more desirable, especially those with such a long and exciting history as that of Ocracoke Island. This strip of sand running along the North Carolina coast has, since 1585, figured in the annals of Spanish, English, and American seafarers. Blackbeard was beheaded near his Ocracocke base in 1718. Later the Islanders carried on an intermittent and involved war with Spain, and during the Revolutionary War shipping through Ocracocke Inlet to avoid British blockades elsewhere became of great importance to the American colonies. cracoke now remains a fishing and shrimping center, a small world all to itself for those hunters, fishermen and vacationers who don’t demand a boardwalk with their ocean. An island family can live there comfortably on less than $100 a month, and life moves along at a calm and pleasant pace with little of the kind of excitement and worry known on the mainland. Carl Georch has written here of the many details of life on Ocracoke today. Informal and chatty, his book divulges the ways of the Islanders and of the vacationers and describes what one can expect to find and to do on the fascinating island and how one can get there. There are no policemen on Ocracoke. None are needed. News travels by a grapevine that works better than telephone or newspaper, and Coast Guard transporation to the mainland serves in lieu of a doctor...
