THOMAS GOULARD (1697–1784) was a French surgeon and anatomist in Montpellier who specialized in genitourinary disorders. He compounded "eau blanche", a mixture containing lead oxyacetate, known as "extract of Saturn", its topical application allegedly effective in the treatment of wounds, burns, and local inflammation. He developed a significant reputation in France for his Oeuvres de Chirurgie de Mr. Goulard, a monograph that went through 7 editions from 1760 to 1779. Only the 1770 edition was published in Montpellier, the others in Pezenas (a village between Montpellier and Beziers). Only 5 copies of the Montpellier edition are listed in OCLC. Volume I is devoted to the benefits of topical lead preparations in a wide variety of surgical lesions, including burns, ulcers, cancers, arthritis, hemorrhoids, and hernias. Volume II covers venereal diseases, including the use of lead preparations in the treatment of venereal disease in pregnant and nursing women and their infants. Chapters on urologic diseases include prostatic and urethral disorders, urinary retention, and urinary incontinence.
