I published 1770, vol.II - 1750), [8], xx, [4], 344; [10], 11-480; vignettes, wood engravings. Full calf leather, gilt ornaments and title to the spine; marbled endpapers and edges (vol II red edges), incomplete bookplate in second volume. Condition: the books edges are rubbed, wear on extremities and on spine, corners bumped; else very good set, clean and sound. Jean-Baptiste Racine was a French dramatist, one of the "big three" of 17th century France (along with Moliere and Corneille), and one of the most important literary figures in the Western tradition. Racine's dramaturgy is marked by his psychological insight, the prevailing passion of his characters, and the nakedness of both plot and stage.
