Contemporary full speckled calf, spines gilt tooled in five compartments, contrasting gilt lettered labels, red sprinkled edges (some wear at edges of spines and on boards with abrasion at fore-edge of upper board of vol II - otherwise a VG set). Pp. [vi] + cxvi + 448 + [2] blank [&] [iv] + 504 [&] [vi] + 538 + [4] blank [&] [iv] + 552 + [2] blank, titles printed in red and black, illus with 27 engraved plates, and decorative initials and head tail pieces in text (bottom corners of pages to p. 14 in vol III creased; previous owner's armorial bookplate on front paste-downs; no inscriptions).
