Weight: 2 lbs. 1.5 oz. George Washington Cable (1844 - 1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been called "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century", as well as "the first modern Southern writer."<br /> <br /> Albert Herter (1871 - 1950) was an American painter, illustrator, muralist, and interior designer. <br /> <br /> Remarkably tight, bright, and clean copy of this handsomely produced and beautifully illustrated limited edition (1 of 204 copies). Originally published in 1879 as author's first novel. Slight wear and curl to vellum (most apparent along its lower edges and intended furl to the edges of the cover). Light uniform age-toning to paper. No foxing to plates. No previous owner markings. Printed for Scribner's by Cambridge Univ. Press.
