Inman enlisted in the Army at age 20, fought Indians in California and Oregon, fought in the Civil War, then returned to the Indian Wars, based this time in Kansas. He retired from the Army in 1872. His sketches of people and events connected with the Trail were reprinted and widely circulated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fé Railway.
