The text is illustrated with copious colour and black-and-white photographs, colour and black-and-white illustrations and maps. Brown faux leather ornately decorated covers with a picture showing part reproduction of Charles Deas' painting " The Trapper ", which has been pasted on post reduction. Gilt titles to the backstrip along with four raised bands to the top edge and lower edge of the backstrip. A history of exploration westward, of the people, explorers, adventurers, traders and others opened up the vast American West for white settlement. Part of The Old West series. .
