Sobre este artículo
Mostly European-themed Chinese shadow puppetry plates. Metz, Dembour et Gangel, n.d. (c. 1843); Seven plates (out of possibly ten published) (margins cut (size 29.5 x 40 cm.) and pasted on cardboard).
Dembour & Gangel were specialised in popular prints and imagery; founded in 1840 by Adrien-Népomucène Dembour and his associate Gangel in the city of Metz. In 1851 the printing house became Gangel and later Gangel frères et Didion.
Starting in 1843, Dembour & Gangel printed shadow puppetry in order for children to be able to learn and play with traditional and vernacular stories. They take the famous shows of Dominique Seraphin (Metz 1747-1800) as a basis thus evoking his success. Seraphin was the first to bring this type of entertainment from Germany to France and played his "Spectacle pour les enfans de France" in Versailles for the royal family from 1780.
These plates depict playful carnaval scenes and classical theatrical and story themes. They are to be To be cut out & articulated with cotton and brass threads and then animated by the means of light, shadow and storytelling. Some can be assembled to give the illusion of transformations.
The full scenarios and instructions are found in this book: "Le Séraphin de l'enfance : recueil de pièces d'ombres chinoises, dédiées à la jeunesse…", Dembour & Gangel, 1943.
Plates include the famous story of "Le pont Cassé" and Molière's "Le Malade imaginaire". Other themes include Comedia dell'Arte, animals, carnival, transportation, magical transformations and curses. Each plate contains descriptive information about the animals, objects or characters:
