Sobre este artículo

A new edition of Thomas Worlidge's etchings of antique gems reprinted from the original 18th century copperplates

Complete with engraved calligraphic title page and 108 fine etchings

The gems were carved and engraved precious stones depicting figures from Greek and Roman myth, emperors, poets, philosophers, including Jesus Christ, Nero, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Sappho, Homer, Socrates, etc. The stones were from the collections of Duke of Marlborough, the Duchess of Portland, Lord Bessborough, Lord Montague, etc.

"The copperplates were formerly the property of the Grace Family but now belong to James Vallentin who publishes them for his Friends to whom they are respectfully presented."

Sir James Vallentin (1814-1870) was a rectifier or distiller, Knight Sheriff of London and Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. He is buried in the church of St Mary the Virgin, Walthamstow.

Thomas Worlidge (1700–1766) was a portrait painter and etcher who painted portraits of George II and David Garrick. Like his famous contemporary Joshua Reynolds, he was a great admirer of Rembrandt. His last major project, Select Collection of Drawings from Curious Antique Gems, Etched after the Manner of Rembrandt, was published posthumously with 182 plates in 1768 and 1780.

Stained blue cloth binding with gilt title on front board, library blind stamp on frontispiece, interior very good with deep, crisp impressions of the copperplates. One plate with 3cm top-right corner missing but well outside the plate mark.
