Hardcover. tall8vo, 24cm, firstedition, iii,272,[8]p., ads., engraved frontis portrait, rubricatedtitle-page, 280 woodcut engravings (head & tail, first letter), in fullcross grain crushed brown morocco, doubled gilt ruled raised bands, giltdecorations and gilt decorated borders in the panels, elaborated giltdecorated borders on the boards, quadruple ruled borders on thedentelles, inner leather hinges, all edges gilt, some foxing to thepreliminaries, a fine copy in fine binding by "Lauford". (Lt) Theportrait of Northcote did not appear until the second edition of 1830.The portrait in this copy is dated 1839 and is engraved from an originalpainting by Harlow. An index to the extensive engravings lists theengraver for each illustration. Northcote in his Preface credits WilliamHarvey with drawing the illustrations on wood. In very attractive bindingwith the binder's stamp - "Lauford", which is fading. Printed by JohnJohnson at the Apollo Press.
