The author recounts 30 years of service in the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army Air Force, and the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He also writes about his service in "The Company," the C.I.A., during the Vietnam War. Mehring has signed the book to fellow Vietnam War veteran and China Post 1 commander, Fred Platt, who was a combat pilot with the Ravens, a covert operation in conjunction with the C.I.A. The inscription reads: "Fred Platt China Post 1 from the first American enlisted man wounded in the Korean War who later flew for Air America. Jim Mehring 5-31-97.".
