Wendell Wilkie's trip around the world in a four-engined consolidated bomber, to see what he could of the world and the war, its battle fronts, its leaders, and its people. This is a well-photographed and documented record of his trip. "I had traveld a total of 31,000 miles, which--looked at as a figure--still impresses and almost bewilders me. For the net impression of my trip was not one o distance from other peoples, but of closeness to them. If I had ever had any doubts that the world has become small and completely interdependent, this trip would have dispelled them altogether." Wendell Willkie was the 1940 Republican nominee for President of the United States. Although defeated in the election (he ran against Franklin Roosevelt) Willkie had become a major figure on the public scene, and at age 48, was deemed likely to remain one for years to come..
