London, 1967. First Edition. Signed by Author. (London: Privately Printed by the Author 1967). SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Limited edition of 150 copies (this one being un-numbered, out-of-series) printed by the Author to establish the copyright whilst negotiating the motion picture deal with Paramount Pictures. It preceded the 1st trade edition. It is foolscap size with white plastic comb binding and features an English £5 note on the front and rear covers. The rarest Deighton item of them all. A VG copy with a couple of largish brown spots to the half-title and the title page. Signed by the Author on the title page: To Reg/ best wishes/ Len Deighton". Sinopsis
Only When I Larf is a late 1960s British comic thriller describing the activities of a team of three fictional confidence tricksters led by Silas Lowther (late 40s), his girlfriend Liz Mason (late 20s) and wannabe apprentice and Liz-worshipper Bob (early 20s). The novel dates from Len Deighton's experimental period after the three Harry Palmer books and was published in 1968 by Michael Joseph and in paperback by Sphere. It is currently (2007) out of print.
