Sobre este artículo

First edition.

206 p.; illustrated.
Gray cloth hardcover shows minor edgewear, including bumping and some sunning to spine, but is otherwise Near Fine. Dust jacket has some minor shelfwear (mainly edgewear), including minor chipping and abrasions, and is price-clipped, but otherwise Very Good+ and housed in a removable protective plastic sleeve to prevent further wear.

From the dust jacket:

In 1925, sixteen-year-old Stephen Dennison was convicted of having stolen $5.00 worth of chocolates. In 1960, he was still in prison, the victim of inept psychiatrists, legal incompetence, institutional corruption, and a small-town sheriff who had wanted him out of the way. [Note: see DENNISON vs. STATE OF NEW YORK: 25 N.Y.2d 904 (1969); 23 N.Y.2d 996 (1969); 49 Misc.2d 533 (1966); 28 A.D.2d 608 (1967).]
The Ordeal of Stephen Dennison is the true story of Dennison's long years of anguish; of his abrupt release; and of the two lawyers who investigated the legality of his incarceration and filed suit for $115,000 against the state of New York. They won the case—only to have it reversed by the Court of Appeals. George Wein, Dennison's attorney, has now filed a brief with the Supreme Court, and the case is still pending.
Included in this fascinating volume are the actual transcripts of the hotly fought trials, the "secret" memos written by prison officials, and Stephen Dennison's own recollections of nearly thirty-five nightmare years of homosexuality, brutality, and sadism in an institution ostensibly for the care and treatment of the mentally ill. Told with objectivity and perception, tempered with compassion and humanity, this is a dramatic and compelling expose of America's penal system, as well as a scathing indictment of the society that perpetrated a monstrous injustice.
[Note: see DENNISON vs. STATE OF NEW YORK: 25 N.Y.2d 904 (1969); 23 N.Y.2d 996 (1969); 49 Misc.2d 533 (1966); 28 A.D.2d 608 (1967).]

LUCY FREEMAN, a resident of New York City and a former reporter for The New York Times, is author of twenty-nine books, many of which deal with psychology. Her first book, Fight Against Fears, the story of her own psychoanalysis, was a best seller in 1951. Among her other works are Before I Kill More and Children Who Kill, two studies of juvenile delinquency and emotional disturbance; The Cry for Love, an exploration of the causes, symptoms, and effects of emotional depression; and the recent Farewell to Fear (1969), a sequel to her first volume. [...] A graduate of Bennington College, she is on the editorial board of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and is a member of Mystery Writers of America.

Born in Germany, LISA HOFFMAN fled her native land in 1939, and spent the war years in England. She came to the United States in 1946, working for a time as a dental assistant, then as a translator, writing subtitles for film companies. For many years she has been the United States correspondent for Swiss and German magazines, and has done a number of free-lance articles for periodicals here and abroad. Miss Hoffman first became interested in the Dennison case several years ago when she was assigned to interview Mr. Dennison for the Swiss magazine
Schweizer Illustrierte. An outstanding journalist and eminent photographer, Miss Hoffman combines an irrepressible love of life with a keen sense of humor and a deep compassion. Miss Hoffman lives in New York City.
