Roe, a late 19th century Presbyterian clergyman, a chaplain during the Civil War, became a bestselling novelist after retiring from the ministry in 1874. His novels, with their strong moral and religious themes, were popular with the middle class in the U.S. and England. "The Original Belle" is no exception, telling a story of a young woman during the Civil War who "was not so beautiful or so good as many of her sisters.but circumstances led her to the endeavor to be true to her own nature and conscience and to adopt a very simple scheme of life."
