Ray Ryland with very best wishes J [?] M[?] Louis.' Merton used his monastic name Louis after his ordination in 1949. One of Merton's most personal books, 'Original Child Bomb' is a series of meditations on the atom bomb, with ink watercolors by Merton. The experimental prose and abstract art never won the book many followers, and it has become one of Merton's rarest titles. It was, nevertheless, one of the books he was most fond of, and sent to friends, as this personal copy attests. Fr. Ray Ryland taught at the University of the South at Sewanee and Franciscan University of Steubenville, and was friends with Merton, visiting him in Kentucky. A piece of history.
