San Francisco: Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell, 1930. 34pp. Large octavo. Quarter calf and decorated boards. Frontis, portrait and facsimiles. Crown and toe of spine chipped, slight cracking to inner hinges, otherwise a good copy, without slipcase. First edition. One of 515 numbered copies of the "Colonial Edition," from a total edition limited to 580 copies. Inserted into this copy is a leaf from Judges. Inscribed and signed by Howell to Arthur Swann, "friend of all Bookmen," and with a brief t.l.s. from Howell to Swann, 4 March 1932, laid in. A note by Edwin Grabhorn on typography of the period is appended. Aitken, a Philadelphia printer, produced an edition of the New Testament in 1781 and of the Old Testament in 1782, and received the endorsement of the Continental Congress in September 1782. His edition of the Bible was the first English language edition produced after the monopoly enjoyed by the Royal Printer ended, and is commonly referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution." Some offsetting from the wrappers to adjacent endleaves at edges, crown and toe of spine of wrapper chipped away, some occasional smudges, otherwise a lovely copy in original state. Second (enlarged) edition, after the much more modest list printed by William Bowyer in 1777. The entire work is an amplification, according to the subtitle, of "A Manuscript List of English Bibles, copied from one compiled by the late Joseph Ames. presented to the Lambeth-Library by Dr. Gifford ....," with "later Discoveries of several Learned Gentlemen ...." The identity of the actual printer is not recorded in ESTC. Ducarel was the first lay librarian at Lambeth, serving some 27 years beginning in 1757. While well represented institutionally, copies, particularly when in this near original condition, are uncommon in commerce. ESTC T96267.

Nuremberg: Peter Conrad Monath, 1730. Octavo. 17, 1120, 320. Very rare. Only two recorded copies of the Morl edition (Erlangen, Nuremberg); none on OCLC. Second corrected edition. Introduction by Gustav Philipp Morl (1673-1750), Doring notes in The Learned Theologians of Germany in the 18th and 19th Centuries was important both for his studies in Descartes as well as Confessional Theology. In the four page introduction he notes that Nuremberg is fortunate in this time. There is a pastedown of showing Jesus examining the 10 Commandments (though the fifth apparently is missing from the tables) and below is a panorama of the city. The other endpaper has a full page of Professor Morl (the same as in the NYPL digital collection of famous personages). The following preliminaries list the entire Augsburg Confession (it was the 200 anniversary of its first appearance). All edges gilt, although when one flips through the text, the fore edge appears green. The binding shows just about no wear. A fresh, clean copy. Contains 12 pages of color maps at the rear. The publisher's box shows light to moderate rubbing and wear. Overall a very nice copy.

Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.…

Volume bound in brown leather with raised bands on the spine, stamped in blind front and back, metal clasp, and metal Star of David (enameled in blue and green and with the letters "IHS" in the center in gold), inner dentelles in gilt. All edges gilt over red, coated brown endpapers. The covers are lightly rubbed, and there is an owner name on the front blank page. Although the book has been well used, it is not badly worn.
