Decorated with necessary pictures and copper plates, serving as the Memorials of the Jews and other antiquities, for the elucidation of the Holy Scriptures. Described in French, ... by Jakob van Ostade, and Arnold Heinrich Westerhovius.
Background Information:
Augustin Calmet, was a French Benedictine monk who was known for his literal explanation of the Bible. From his hand was published among others this standard work on the field of Biblical history, composed in the form of an alphabetical dictionary.
This dictionary was the first of its kind because of the extensive and literal explanation of the Bible and was the point of departure for many Biblical dictionaries that were published afterwards.
