1969. FINE. Original oil on board, 11 1/2 x 8 in. framed with linen mat. SIGNED and dated CAA lower right, framed dimensions 17 1/2 x 14 label on back "General Store Gallery / Austin, Texas" and sealed. Photos on request. James Boren was one of the deans of modern western painters in Texas. Born in Waxahachie, Boren was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America and became one of its most celebrated and honored members. His preferred media was watercolor. Few oils have come to market. In the late 1960s he and fellow CAA member Melvin Warren, both established homes and studios in the small central Texas town of Clifton and helped turn that city into something of a western artist's colony. This small gem in oil is rare to see and not offered for sale previously, having been purchased by me from the original owner in San Antonio in the early 1980's. Only a few oils have turned up on the auction sights, most recent items are $3,000 - 8,000.00.

1955. HOOGENDYK, Marianna van Rossen. 1955 SKETCHBOOK WITH 90 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS, PAINTINGS, WATERCOLORS & MIXED MEDIA PIECES. In a standard composition notebook (unlined); there are blank pages following the paintings/drawings, and the next to last two pages are pencil lecture notes. The first page, a pencil, ink and wash drawing of a young girl, is dated 4/4/55. The rest are undated; all are unsigned, but the notebook cover bears the artist's name in capital letters. Ms. Hoogendyk, also known as Marianne, was an art student at the Sorbonne; her family was from Sharon, Connecticut at the time. There are some accomplished sketches of buildings, of circus scenes with animals and clowns, some studies of men and children on the street, of musicians in concert/jamming, and of costumed dancers (most of the latter are crayon or pastel). A nicely preserved archive. 20 pencil, ink and wash drawings; 39 pencil sketches; 7 watercolors; 17 crayon/pastel drawings; and 7 mixed media pieces.

Various marginal notations in pencil and pen in several colors. Application serial number was 110668, received by US Patent Office (USPTO) July 14, 1943. Patent was issued Feb 27, 1945, number 140,435. Embossed stamp of "Reynolds Bristol Board" made in England on sheet 1. Embossed stamp of "Patent Office Dietzgen Bristol Board" on sheet 2. Both sheets with small punched hole in upper margin. We include a printout of the patent text for reference. Hand-drawn patent drawings, while critical to the patent process, don't often appear for sale. With the inventor, attorney and USPTO the only likely recipients, few were made and after expiring many were discarded.
