London: Printed for C D Piguenit, No. 8, Aldgate, 1793. 1st edition, small format (12.2 x 7.3cm), old plain boards covered in worn, natural beige coarse-weave cloth. 142pp + 2pp publisher's advertisement. A scarce, late-18th century school book, with the owner's name of Thomas Henly and date 1795 inscribed in ink, and also hand-stamped in inked letters. Thomas Henly (1781-1849) was born and bred in Lyneham, Wiltshire and lived with his family at Preston East Farm, and was certainly not universally liked as shown in an extract from a poem by an unknown author: "There is stiff Tommy Henly, rides to hunting so grand/On a fine prancing nag with a whip in his hand/With shining boots on and full to his shirt/And makes the poor tradesman pay for his work." [Further family history details available]. Good copy for its age.

Hardback. Good. Printed for T Longman in Pater-Noster-Row, [London], 1762, first edition (but see later); 8vo, pp xx, 371 plus page of list of books printed for Thomas Longman; contemporary calf, both boards detached and the one mismatched in design with the other, spine good but with some small loss head and foot so a copy in need of binding repair; bottom corner of front free end paper missing but the book block complete, firm and with good margins although with a little light dust soiling here and there, particularly on the title page where exposed at the foot. Although this is indeed a first edition under this particular title the work was earlier printed 1750 as "The Reflector Representing Human Affairs As They Are and May Be Improved ... " Other than for the title and, hence, title page, this Longman reprint appears to be identical to the earlier edition right down to the list of books at the end. Shaw, 1694-1763 was an English physician, translator and writer on a wide range…

Descripción:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
All proceeds benefit The Friends of the San Anselmo Library. No expedited shipping on this set. Extra charges for sending the set will be added to the order after shipping to match the actual cost of mailing.
