Blue wraps, sewn binding. All have light soiling and some have small tears along spines, 2 volumes have dampstaining to upper corner and portions of text. Couvertures souples.

(Evans), 27057. Attributed to Oliver Goldsmith in the Dictionary of National Biography. Former owner's name at head of title page: "Francis Blakes." Faint circular stamp on title page. Another former owner's name at head of first page of Preface: J.B. Caldwell. In Very Good- Condition: slightly rubbed; lacking upper corner of front free endpaper and title page, without loss of text; light soiling, foxing, and browning; solid.

Printed for T Longman in Pater-Noster-Row, [London], 1762, first edition (but see later); 8vo, pp xx, 371 plus page of list of books printed for Thomas Longman; contemporary calf, both boards detached and the one mismatched in design with the other, spine good but with some small loss head and foot so a copy in need of binding repair; bottom corner of front free end paper missing but the book block complete, firm and with good margins although with a little light dust soiling here and there, particularly on the title page where exposed at the foot. Although this is indeed a first edition under this particular title the work was earlier printed 1750 as "The Reflector Representing Human Affairs As They Are and May Be Improved ... " Other than for the title and, hence, title page, this Longman reprint appears to be identical to the earlier edition right down to the list of books at the end. Couvertures rigides, Paper covered boards, paper spine labels, engraved frontispiece in each volume. Bon état. Light wear and light soiling to covers, spines rubbed and one chipped, water stain to spine of one volume and first 2 leaves, contents are age-darkened and with an occasional spot, former owner's name in pencil on front pastedowns. Bindings are all tight, and books appear to be unread.

Birmingham: Birmingham: printed by J. Thompson, 1791. Full leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo; not paginated (approx 400pp). In contemporary full calf (lightly worn), single gilt rolls to board margins, flat spine divided by gilt double fillets into six compartments, gilt lettered red leather title label to second compartment, marbled endpapers, unobtrusive light spotting to opening and closing leaves and very occasional feint staining,overall a clean and attractive copy complete with engraved frontispiece. A rare edition; ESTC T94967, listing just four institutional holdings all in the UK.

First edition, 2 volumes; 482, [i]; 529, [i]pp. Contemporary uniform full calf (lightly worn, front boards detached), spines gilt, spine labels largely missing, very occasional feint spotting but overall a very sound example of this popular novel centred on the machinations of the evil Italian nobleman Zeluco.
