The impact of war on the civil and domestic life of the nations involved was nothing short of revolutionary and the author paints an absorbing and unforgettable picture of the unheard of changes that came to pass: censorship and propaganda, rationing and air-raids, violent fluctuations in morale as bellicosity, defeatism and pacifism ebbed and flowed. The soldier at the front became alienated from the non-combatants at home, as much of the war poetry indicates; and the rapid emancipation of women, partly through their mobilisation for the war effort, led them into activities which had till then been exclusively masculine."
