Eli Mandel (1922-1992) was born in Estevan, SK, growing up there and in Regina. An Idiot Joy, his fourth collection, won him the Governor-General's award for poetry in 1967, one of many awards he received for his outstanding contribution as writer, critic, editor and anthologist to Canadian life and literature.
