[1933 PLATINUM PHOTOGRAPH OTTO KAHN WITH BLACKSTONE STUDIOS SIGNATURE] BLACKSTONE STUDIOS, NY, PLATINUM PRINT/PHOTOGRAPH of the famed financier Otto Kahn, pencil signed "Blackstone, NY", in pencil at lower left corner, "April 1933" in pencil at lower right, number "47" in pencil below this, 10-1/2" high x 8" across to the plate marks on 13-1/2" x 10-1/2" cotton rag photographic paper…limited edition photograph, possibly one-of-a-kind or only known copy that was part of a photo album of more than 40 similar high-quality portrait photographs of Kahn taken and signed by leading photography studios of the period in New York City and elsewhere around the US. between the mid 1920s and 1933, the year before Kahn died…the album was overseen by Kahn's wife Addie…the photographs were not intended for public distribution, and no duplicates of any have been found in online research…considering Kahn's support of the arts and his great wealth, he presumably commissioned the high-quality platinum and palladium photographs as encouragement and recognition for the studios and also give support to the developing field of photography as an art form; NOTES: OTTO KAHN, 1867-1934, German-born American investment banker, collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts…well known figure of the period, appearing on the cover of Time Magazine and was sometimes referred to as the "King of New York". In business, he was best known as a partner at Kuhn, Loeb & Co., who reorganized and consolidated railroads. In his personal life, he was a great patron of the arts, and had a particular interest in the growing field of photography as an art form; BLACKSTONE STUDIO, active 1930s-40s, leading photography studio that took photographs of noted individuals of the period including Harry Truman, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Martha Gellhorn; PROVENANCE: acquired at a Fairfield County estate sale of descendants of Otto Kahn /// CONDITION: fine, remains of paper the photo was at one time affixed to in an album at corners on back keywords: art photograph, platinum print portrait, business celebrity portrait, limited edition photograph
