Hardcover Book in Very Good Condition with a Good Dust Jacket. Archival protective jacket cover. 45 Illustration Plates, b/w and color. The Ottomans --not Turkish, not Middle Eastern, not a shadow of the West-- were they the legendary savages, sybarites? Andrew Wheatcroft explores the qualities that were uniquely Ottoman, those warriors from the steppes of Central Asia. And today, there is still a pervasive influence of Ottoman style, from the four hundred years of Ottoman culture. The book is bound in red and black boards with gilt outlined panel on spine w/gilt titles within. Red panel from and back have spotting, lower edges rubbed, spine heel compresses. Binding tight and solid. Internals very clean, no markings. Clean, bright jacket with illus of "Cairo Bazaar, 1856" by J.F.H.Lewis and on back: "Women and Children Entering a Bathhouse", by Camille Rogier; spine head chipped, spine heel wrinkled with a slit up the rear hinge half way up, protected and quite attractive in archival cover. xxix + 322 pages including Notes on the Illustrations, Notes on the Text, Bibliography, and Index. 9.6 x 6.25 inches. 1994, Viking Press/Penguin Group, England and New York, New York, USA
