This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. 1836 AFRICA 1ed Lander Niger River Exploration Illustrated Maps Slavery

Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.
The specifics of the journey were written and published under various titles, including 'The Travels of Richard and John Lander'. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. This 1836 first edition includes nine fine, full-page engravings, including maps and views of local tribes.

1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue in volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Not in Melzi. No copies located. Apparently unrecorded booklet with text and illustrations produced completely in lithograph. The text reproduces an italic calligraphy that must have been lettered in reverse on stone, or written out on transfer paper before being applied to the lithographic stone. The narrative concerns a lady who is handily juggling simultaneous affairs with a young man and with the young man's father.

First edition, octavo, three volumes; 315, 319, 356pp. In contemporary half leather over marbled boards (a little worn), four raised spine bands, gilt lettered red morocco title labels to second compartments, remaining compartments richly gilt. Spotting and staining to early and closing leaves of each volume, author's name inscribed to title page, first quire of vol.1 misbound, otherwise a very good clean copy. Attractive copy of St.Leger's increasingly uncommon final novel, the last before his untimely death at the age of thirty following an epileptic seizure.

First edition, octavo, three volumes; 310, 350, 326pp. In contemporary red straight-grain half morocco over marbled boards (very lightly worn, spines faded), four raised spine bands between double gilt fillets, gilt titles and volume numbers to second and fourth compartments respectively. Early heraldic ownership label to front pastedowns and ink ownership name to title-pages, without half-titles, unobtrusive very light foxing to opening and closing leaves of each volume. A very attractive copy of this historical novel by Shelley's friend and financial advisor, Horace Smith, poet, novelist and stockbroker. Sadleir 328-9.

Book is in a good to very good condition regarding its age with no dustjacket as published. The boards and the spine are rubbed, bumped and show signs of use and shelf wear (see photos). Dedication to former owner on front free endpaper. Book has a crack to the rear inside hinge but the connections between text block and boards are still intact. Slightly spotting and miniscule closed tears to some of the pages. Dusting to the edges of the text block.
