A remarkable man who fought for the Confederacy, served in the Texas State Legislature, required prisons to teach a man a trade, and in general did not believe in courts. He said: any man who can't defend his own property, his honor and his own ideas with his own rifle does not deserve to have property, honor or rights." When he was defrauded he went after the banker involved with an old octagon-barrelled rifle. Up to then the banker had always trusted in lawyers, suddenly he wrote out a check for the $25,000 that McGehee had been swindled out of. A small but fine story of Texas individualism told with the skill for which J. Frank Dobie was so well known.
