Engraved plates [Frontispiece + 10 further plates] as confirmed by the British Library + Oxford & Cambridge & 9 other libraries. 12mo Marbled leather with covers of gilt and floral design the spine on 5 raised bands which were possibly once gilt but now mostly worn away to just traces.Black spine label lacks I of OVID'S and part of T in EPISTLES The Fore-edges are gaufered on four wide gold corners with with rows of stars and there is a band of red marbling at the center between the four gilt areas. [the leather is somewhat pock-marked/the corners worn/top compartment splitting at front hinge as also a partial central crack to the top two compartments mid-spine/head of spine with 2mm chipping] Frontispiece + Titlepage + Dedication + [4pp=Advertisement] + [24pp=Preface] + [2p=Table [=Contents] +221pp + [1p of Books for sale by Tonson but further pages of booklist are missing] Paper is a bit uniformly tanned throughout but else in nice condition without marking or tears. An unusual binding and nice illustrations.
