[Almanac] The Oxford Almanack for the Year of Our Lord God MDCCLV. With an etched allegorical headpiece, etched by John Green after a design by Samuel Wale, under which is "The Regal Table Since the Conquest," on the left-hand side; and, "The Officers of the University," listing the officers of the University: the Chancellor, the Right Honorable Charles, Earl of Arran; the High Steward, the Right Honorable John, Earl of Westmoreland; the Vice Chancellor, George Huddeford, D.D., President of Trin. Coll.; and Proctors M. Maddock of Braz. N. Coll. and Ed. Smallwell of Christ Church. Engraved in the lower right-hand corner of the image is: "I. Green Sculpt OXON." In the lower left-hand corner of the image is "S. WALE INVENT". The date "1755" is engraved at the top right-hand corner of the plate impression, just above the etched image.

Printed on one side only, an unnumbered sheet, a broadside almanac, the untrimmed sheet measures 75.5 cm x 55.5 cm, and the image measures 36 cm x 43.5 cm, entirely engraved by John Green after the elaborate allegorical drawing of Samuel Wale (1721?-1786), depicting a young man being led by a female wearing a winged headdress. The young man seems to be restrained by two figures arising from a pit, one of which, a male, appears to have donkey's ears. Children play with scientific instruments and books in the foreground. Few of Samuel Wale's easel paintings survive. He was known in his lifetime for images that summarized British history from ancient times to his own in the eighteenth century, as evidenced by this allegorical image. The calendar for the Oxford academic year 1755 is engraved below the large etched headpiece.
This very rare surviving broadside almanac has undergone expert conservation, starting with a surface cleaning to remove superficial and ground-in dirt. It was then washed to reduce acidity and some discoloration, after which it was resized to restore crispness and resilience to the sheet. Tears and other weak areas were reinforced with mulberry paper, using wheat starch paste. It was then flattened to remove creases and planar distortions. It has not been matted. On the lower left-hand margin there is slight paper loss of blank paper from the worn edge. Petter, p. 67.

Descripción:
London : J Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring, and John Place, 1657 A very good copy of Londinopolis in full leather binding. James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn. This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine. It is showing some wear to the front hinge and edges and has a small scuff but is… Leer más

Engraving on laid paper 26 x 17 cm (platemark including caption); 35.8 x 22 cm (sheet), decorative border and title cartouche, lower corner a little creased, margins toned, but in very good condition. Fine mid-eighteenth depiction of the Festival commemorating Confucius. This engraving appeared in "A new system of geography" by Daniel Fenning & Joseph Collyer first published in London in 1765-6 (later revised by Frederick Hervey and appearing in a number of editions) and is an example of the demand for publishers to supply views of the East and exotic "New Worlds". The late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had seen a dramatic increase in the publication of voyage accounts (and compilations and collections) on the London book market. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
