Andrew Lang's descriptive history of Oxford, where he studies at Balliol College. Lang takes the reader across the history of the city and notes important events, and how the city developed with the university over time.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-nine plates and in-text illustrations.Collated, complete.Lang is best remembered now for his 'Fairy Books', a series of twenty-five short story collections pertaining to mythology and fairy tales, the first published being 'The Blue Fairy Book' in 1889.Illustrated by a variety of different artists.Ink inscription to the reverse of the half-title, 'Ernest S. Davies, (from T. H. D.)'. Ernest Salter Davies was a Welsh teacher and educationalist, known for being the director of education in Kent from 1918 to 1938. He held a great influence into the development of education in the first half of the twentieth century across England. He won a scholarship in classics to Jesus College in Oxford before 1895. The 'T. H. D.' giver of this book is likely Ernest's father, Thomas Davies, who was a Baptist clergyman.Twenty-two pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, with some light rubbing and marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the spine and extremities. Spine is a little faded. Front hinge is a little strained but remains firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
