By John Lawrence, London, printed by Bernard Lintott, 1717, FIFTH EDITION. Engraved frontispiece, 1 text illustration, a few pictorial head- and tailpieces, pages: [10], [1]-84. Lacking A1 (half-title? blank?), collates the same as Henry 937, we have had several copies of these two Laurence titles all have started on A2, Henrey, 937. The third work also by Laurence: THE GENTLEMAN'S RECREATION: or the second part of the art of gardening improved. Containing several new experiments and curious observations relating to fruit-trees: ... by John Laurence, M.A. ... To which is added by way of appendix, A new and familiar way to find a most exact Meridian Line by the Pole-Star; whereby Gentlemen may know the true Bearings of their Houses and Garden Walls ...By Edward Laurence, Brother to the Author. London, printed for Bernard Lintott, 1717, SECOND EDITION. Handsome engraved frontispiece, 4 folding plates, 1 text illustration, (the plate showing a method of finding the meridian line, often missing is present in this copy), pictorial head- and tailpieces, pages: Lacking A1 the same as part 1, blank or half-title [18], [1]-115, [1] - advert. Henrey, 943: collates the same as our copy and "Not all copies of this edition contain the fourth plate showing a method of finding a meridian line". Condition: corners of binding slightly bumped and slightly rubbed, 2 small book labels on front pastedown, endpapers lightly browned, 1 small signature on title page of first work, contents of all 3 works bright and clean, plate of A Wall of Peaches and Nectarines in the first work replaced with one taken from a copy of the same edition. From the library of Rosemary Verey OBE, VMH (1918- 2001) with her small book label on front pastedown, she was an internationally known English garden designer, lecturer and prolific garden writer who designed the famous garden at Barnsley House, near Cirencester. Verey's most famous garden design was that of her own house, Barnsley House, near Cirencester in Gloucestershire. In 1970 she opened the garden for one day to the public for the National Gardens Scheme but eventually it was open 6 days per week to accommodate the 30,000 annual visitors. In 1984 when her husband David died, Rosemary Verey began designing gardens for American and British clients. Most notable are HRH the Prince of Wales, and Sir Elton John, Princess Michael of Kent, the Marquess of Bute and the New York Botanical Garden. See Wikipedia. Blanche Henrey, British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800, Volume 3, page 23; H. Frederic Janson, Pomona's Harvest, page344; Sandra Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona, pages 51-52.
