A New Edition, in Two Volumes, greatly enlarged from the Author's manuscript notes. Clarendon Press. Oxford. 1818. 2 volumes. Quarto. xvii, 583pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of White Kennet, 3 further plates, two of which are folding; 526pp + indices [3X-4F2] + glossary [A-N], 6 folding engraved plates. (10 engraved plates in total, or which 8 are folding). All edges red. Contemporary full calf, spines in six compartments with gilt tooling and faded leather labels. Upper joints and hinges cracked. Upper hinges repaired with cloth tape. Boards scuffed with some surface loss. Rubbed to extremities and spines. Light foxing to the frontispiece. Internally the text and plates are formly bound, crisp, bright and clean with occasional spotting and light offsetting.
White Kennett (1660 - 1728) Vicar of Ambroseden, later Bishop of Peterborough. Antiquarian and author. "His reputation as a topographer and philologist was enhanced by his 'Parochial Antiquities attempted in the History of Ambrosden, Burcester, and other adjacent parts in the counties of Oxford and Bucks, With a Glossary of Obsolete Terms,' Oxford. 1696, 4to, dedicated to his patron. Sir W. Glynne. A new edition, greatly enlarged from the author's manuscript notes, was issued at Oxford (2 vols. 1818, 4to) under the editorship of Berkeley Bandinel." ODNB.
Dr B. Badinel, chief librarian of The Bodleian, writer, editor and orator. White Kennett's own copy, enriched with manuscript notes was given to the Bodleian Library, from which this enlarged edition was produced by Dr Badinel, together with indices. An additional appendix containing a History of Chilton by The Rev Thomas Delafield from a manuscript in the Bodleian. The frontispiece portrait was engraved from an original in the possession of Sir John Bayley, a direct descendant of White Kennett.
